Alternative History Walking Tour Gothenburg – Discover the City’s Hidden Past

If you’re looking for a walking tour that goes beyond kings, cathedrals, and tourist landmarks, the Alternative History Walking Tour Gothenburg offers a compelling journey through the city’s forgotten past. This immersive experience sheds light on the lives of working-class residents, women under surveillance, and the often-overlooked role Sweden played in global trade and colonialism. Step off the beaten path and uncover the stories history books left behind.

Start in Haga – A Charming District with a Darker Past

Our tour begins in Haga, Gothenburg’s oldest suburb, known today for its picturesque streets and cozy cafés. But beneath the charming surface lies a more complex history. In the late 19th century, Haga was a working-class neighborhood struggling with poverty, overcrowding—and a regulated prostitution system.

As you walk along the cobbled streets, you’ll learn how cafés once doubled as disguised brothels, operating under government regulation. Hear the stories of women who were forced to register with authorities and were subject to invasive medical checks, often under the watchful eyes of the morality police. These are the untold human stories that shaped the neighborhood long before it became a tourist favorite.

Climb to Skansen Kronan – Fortress of Authority

Next, we ascend to Skansen Kronan, a 17th-century fortress that looms over Haga. Although it was never used in active battle, its very presence symbolized state power and social control. From its hilltop perch, we’ll reflect on how the fortress served as a constant reminder to the working-class communities below that authority was never far away.

Looking out over the city, you’ll see where wealth and poverty once intersected—and still do. This panoramic view helps reveal the invisible class boundaries that shaped life in Gothenburg for generations.

Down to Skeppsbron – Tracing Sweden’s Colonial Footprint

We then move toward Skeppsbron, along the historic harbor near the old customs house. Here, you’ll hear about Sweden’s lesser-known colonial ventures, including its control of the Caribbean island St. Barthélemy from 1784 to 1878. During this period, enslaved Africans were bought and sold on the island as Sweden participated in the Atlantic Slave Trade.

Local Gothenburg merchants profited from the import of sugar, rum, and coffee, much of it produced by enslaved labor. The wealth generated by this trade funded the growth of the city—but at a great human cost, rarely acknowledged in traditional history tours.

Magasinsgatan – Center of Industrial Labor

From there, we explore Magasinsgatan, once the heart of Gothenburg’s textile industry. This bustling area was home to large factories where women and children labored in harsh, unsafe conditions during Sweden’s industrialization in the 19th century.

As you walk through these once-industrial streets, you’ll hear stories of exploitation, resistance, and survival—stories of ordinary people whose efforts laid the foundation for modern Swedish society.

End at Gustav Adolfs Torg – The City’s Colonial Legacy

The tour ends at Gustav Adolfs Square, the symbolic heart of Gothenburg. Just a few blocks away lies the former headquarters of the Swedish East India Company, once the most powerful trading company in Sweden. Founded in the 18th century, the company was deeply involved in global trade, dealing in silk, tea, porcelain—and opium.

This part of the tour connects Gothenburg to broader global networks of exploitation, colonization, and wealth accumulation. It challenges visitors to think critically about how historical prosperity was often built at the expense of others.
